ARTIFICIAL (2022)

for violin, viola, percussion and electronics (53 minutes circa)

«ARTIFICIAL» explores the impact of technology on our everyday lives through an intense, haunting and rhythmic soundscape.

Divided into 8 parts and conceived as an album, the music metaphorically explores the human and emotional consequences of life surrounded by data, where reality seems to be heading towards a dystopian future with no return.

Echoing the dehumanization produced by the continuous replacement of the real by the virtual, Artificial is built and designed from algorithms, programming loops, mechanical and obsessive systems, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The musicians, transformed into automatons, repeat highly complex mechanical structures (loops), reaching the limits of physical resistance to play. Samples and live instruments are mixed to create a kind of hybrid that tries to reconcile the mechanicalness of the machine with human expressiveness.

The composition was written in 2022 especially for the musicians of the Ensemble Vertixe Sonora (Spain) and was supported by the Ibermúsicas program.

The premiere was performed by Roberto Alonso (violin), Alfonso Noriega (viola), Diego Ventoso (percussion) and Oscar Carmona (electronics).
